Conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Stewart, and suggested at the twelfth Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Guide Right became the fraternity’s national service program. Leon Steward is the founder of the National Guide Right movement of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Past Western Province Polemarch. Soon after the St. Louis Alumni Chapter’s beginning in 1921, Leon W. Steward and J. Jerome Peters were assigned to research possible programs that would assist in developing the youth of the Black community and to devise a “meaningful and practical approach” to the problem of Black youth underachievement.
Ultimately, Brother Steward, proposed a program of guidance to be designated as Guide Right, with the purpose of assisting high school seniors to choose and pursue useful careers. The focus of Guide Right, from its inception, was to provide scholarships to needy and talented students, and to inform young people of the professions and other career options.
The founding objectives of Guide Right may be summarized as follows:
To inform youth of the values of higher education, of assistance available for continued educational pursuits.
Guide Right encompasses many of our youth oriented programs such as mentoring, college preparatory programs, and tutoring. However, the Flagship Initiative of the Guide Right Service Program is the Kappa Leadership Development League (Kappa League). Guide Right is a program of the educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informative in character. The purposes of the Guide Right Service Program is to place the training experience and friendly interest of successful men at the disposal of youth needing inspiration and counsel regarding their choice of a life’s career, and to arouse the interest of the entire community in the problems of youth as they seek to realize lives of usefulness.

Core Initiatives:
Kappa Kamp is conceived as a summer enrichment camp providing students, ages 12-16, with the opportunity to acquire productive life-skills through intensive workshops and learning through structured play activities. Students may choose from a number of enrichment camps and classes, as well as attend a variety of cultural and recreational activities, field trips, and educational lectures. Work, fun, and more, all take place within a safe, professionally designed and supervised setting. From June 2-14, 2019 Kappa Kamp will be held on the campus of Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas. Paul Quinn College holds the distinction of being the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River. The college was founded in 1872 in Austin, Texas by a small group of African Methodist Episcopal preachers at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church and later moved to Dallas, TX. Originally, the college was called the Connectional High School and Institute. The school’s original purpose was to educate freed slaves and their children.
The primary objectives of the enrichment camps are to:
Provide enrichment activities for ages 12-16.
Motivate students to seek higher levels of achievement.
Expose students to activities rich in cultural information and experience.
Develop students’ reading, writing and speaking skills while involved in each workshop.
Provide experiences that focus on science, technology and survival.
Provide a spiritual fatih-based atmosphere for human growth and development
Provide character education and citizenship in an ethical environment.
Allow campers to make friends from around the world in a structured and safe environment.
